As I’m blogging these two gorgeous sessions from late fall - two of my favorites from a sun drenched October evening - I’m sitting wrapped in a giant blanket huddled on my couch with news of the temperature tomorrow plummeting to -12 degrees swirling in my head. School is already shut down for the next two days, and everyone I know is gearing up for a 48 hour parenting marathon while trapped indoors with stir crazy, cooped up littles. Suffice it to say that if there is ever a time to be wishing for warm golden light (and temperatures that are jean jacket-appropriate), tonight is the night.
I often have parents questioning my sanity when I suggest starting their session in the evening hours (in the summer, 6:30-6:45ish pm, earlier in the fall when the sun sets earlier). And I get it. As someone who happily had all three of her kids tucked into bed by 7:38 p.m. tonight, I completely appreciate the beauty of a routine for little ones with early bedtimes. But what has taken me a few years in the parenting trenches to learn is how well your kids will rise to the occasion for rare shifts in that routine, especially for something as fun as a photo shoot (…I know, if you are someone who hasn’t worked with me before, you might not necessarily view a photo shoot as something joyful, but I promise, you’ll be in for quite a bit of stress-free goofing around and fun).
