My friends and I joke sometimes about my youngest son, who as a baby rarely gave up a good smile - one of them called it "giving up the wow". Her son, conversely, was so easily amused by anything from peekaboo to silly sounds, songs and just about anything. Just like my son and his best buddy, these two siblings were opposites in this regard as well. Big sister was full of giggles and grins, while the birthday boy, her newly ONE year old little brother was the king of seriousness. Thankfully their mom and dad knew this was going to be the case. It's funny because at age one, many kids freeze in front of the camera - notoriously smiley babies are just full of stares, tears and even a bit of stink eye. But little man in this family was purely himself, with a wide eyed serious gaze, and I don't think mom and dad would have it any other way. We shot at Lighthouse Beach in Evanston, and even in the early spring with limited leaves on the trees, this location couldn't be more stunning. It was the perfect backdrop for this adorable family of four from Skokie who met me there on a crisp April afternoon to update their family portraits and smash a bit of cake to celebrate their baby's first birthday (and boy, his smash cake was killer. This little man was NOT SHY about loving the cake).
